Episode 224: Cheers to Multi-Faceted Teacher Lives (with Diane Hidy)
Hello my studio teacher friends! Welcome to the Beyond Measure Podcast: your place for unpacking the many human elements behind our Music Teacher Work. Christina Whitlock here, your host AND self-appointed Anytime Piano Teacher Friend. Today, our summertime conversation series continues with the one and only Diane Hidy. Diane Hidy’s work as a performer, teacher, composer, blogger… all of it has influenced the work we do today and I wanted to chat with her about this super-sized career she’s had.
In case you’re not familiar with Diane Hidy, let me tell you: Diane started her career studying with some of the biggest names in teaching at the time like John Perry and Leon Fleisher. She eventually found her way to teaching, ultimately starting a blog that was HUGELY influential in piano teacher circles. She also publishes uniquely thoughtful compositions, some of which are published by Kjos, but all of her work currently exists through Wendy’s Stevens’ site, ComposeCreate.com.
I’m going to say one more thing about Diane Hidy before we chat: She’s a teachers’ teacher. When I launched the Beyond Measure podcast, much to my surprise, Diane was one of my earliest cheerleaders. She consistently encouraged me that I was doing good work, and – here’s the icing on the cake – when I launched the Patreon community, she was one of my earliest supporters over there. If you know Diane, you know she only says what she means so it’s always been nice to have her stamp of approval on my work.
Here’s something about Diane Hidy and yours truly: You put us in a room together and we can talk ALL DAY. There are some pretty humorous outtakes from the conversation you’re about ready to hear, and some of those can be found inside the SuperFriends Community on Patreon. Head to ChristinaWhitlock.com/community to find out how you can support this show and get access to all the good stuff.
And now, I bring you highlights from my conversation with Diane Hidy:

Friends, I’m telling you: Diane Hidy is one in a million. I hope you enjoyed our conversation today. Remember, there’s SO MUCH MORE where this came from, and that’s available over in the SuperFriends Community on Patreon. Head to ChristinaWhitlock.com/community to learn all about it.
As of this episode’s release, I’ll be seeing many of you at NCKP in just a few days. If you are at the NCKP conference, please make sure you say hello. I’m presenting a session on Quiet Students on Thursday at 10:30, and I’m hosting a meetup with Amy Chaplin from Piano Pantry on Friday at 5:15. I am looking forward to being with my people in just a matter of days!
If you can’t come to NCKP, mark your calendars for August 1st, when I’m hosting a live launch party for my newest resource, The Paradox of Play. You can find info on that in today’s shownotes.
For now, this is me wishing you well. Onward and upward, my friends!
